Goo Hye Sun Star Interview at Cafe Manolin (10/21/09)

From susamericca@soompi.com:

Although I am not 100% positive, I have a feeling that "lucky fan" is the owner of this blog which was listed in DCinside. I am going to translate what he said, esp. the portion he wrote about GHS.

This blogger states that he was one of the interviewers selected to interview GHS on STAR INTERVIEW. He is planning to post the entire interview by next Wed, October 28, 2009.

He says he had a busy week but interviewing GHS was most memorable to him. He says that the STAR INTERVIEW took place at GHS' Cafe Manolin which is located in Kang Nam (WOW, I did not know her cafe was in Kang Nam---now I wonder if Tablo may actually have his wedding at GHS's cafe. He would not identify the location of his wedding but said that it will be a very intimate wedding somewhere in Kang Nam of Seoul! That would be very sweet if it is really true!) He says that Cafe Manolin belongs to GHS and that she actually manages it herself.

He says the STAR INTERVIEW took about 3 hours of interviewing and taking pix. He says she took a pix with him and that she is just so nice. He puts in parenthesis that GHS is "just his type" with a red heart sign! He also says that his mother, after seeing BOF, became GHS fan and really likes her.

Explanation Behind Cafe Manolin's Name

From smdrma/translated by susamerica:

그 마놀린 뜻은 소설 '노인과 바다'에 나오는 소년의 이름이 마놀린이라고 해요 'Manolin' is the name of the boy who is a character in the novel (by Earnest Hemingway).

From pixie_eve:

So the Cafe got its name from Hemingway's. That's very much like GHS I'll just give a brief background to the short novel since i read it some years ago hehe...

I think HS chose him coz Manolin signifies the commitment and devotion to a teaching or to a work (represented by the fisherman Santiago). In the story, Santiago is an old fisherman who could not get any luck in sailing the seas. He got one luck with a big tuna but it ended up being eaten by the sharks. His defeat never deterred him and he continued doing what he does best -- to fish.

Manolin is Santiago's little boy apprentice who learned from him, believed in him and never lost faith in his abilities. In the end, even if Santiago was defeated by the sharks and never got the big fish he wanted, he was comforted with the knowledge that Manolin is there, and he will continue what Santiago started/did. Santiago knows he will live through Manolin, his teachings and his work will carry on through the little boy who never lost faith in him and who always believed in his abilities.

GHS choosing Manolin holds a deep meaning in how she values art. Maybe she is seeing herself as a Manolin who will continue the legacy of ART itself. She is a disciple of the ART and upholding it through her Cafe is her mission as Manolin. Great work HS!! I salute your dedication to your craft.

Edit: Or maybe GHS has a Santiago in her life. I remembered how she always said that Leonardo da Vinci was her inspiration. I wonder if HS sees herself as a Manolin to Da Vinci, a follower who wishes to continue Da Vinci's art and principles .. just a thought

Goo Hye Sun FanNote: Gallery Cafe Manolin at Night

(blogger's dogs)

The terrace seats comes w/ individual blankets too!

English Translation by susamerica@soompi.com:

Little summary of the blogger's comments about Cafe Manolin--I just love the ambiance of that place and I have not yet been there!

This blogger was taking an evening walk with her two dogs and decided to turn into a new alley and found an eye-catching new place. (The previous blogger also found Manolin by accident and went in because of the eye-catching terrrace.) She photographs and records her experience at the Cafe Manolin.

She asks the attending lady at the front and found out that it has been open only for the past three days. She asked about having dinner at the cafe and they only had brunch menu at this time. When asked if she can bring her dogs in and it was OK tool
(Wow, what a friendly place and dogs are welcome too! Why Not! HS loves her dogs too. So, the cute puppies belong to the blogger and she tied them up at the handrail.)

(When the blogger said she turned into a new corner in the neighborhood and found the cafe, it reminded me of HS's song. I wonder if HS found that location as she thought about words to her song....Cafe Manolin must be situated within a quiet village-like area, not in a busy intersection---how cute is that! )

She says that every corner is filled with cute things and that lady guests will love them. She found out that the owner of the cafe is Goo Hye Sun. (Now, we know for sure that GHS owns Cafe Manolin!) Blogger also found out that, as we all know already, GHS decorated every little things inside the cafe. (I also hear that GHS displayed many gifts like books and such given to her by her fans.)

She points out how GHS piled up the cement blocks in a disorderly way. (Yet look at how she situated the lights behind the cement blocks to give such beautiful ambiance to the entire room.) She also noticed the unbalanced ways she hung her picture frames. (I love GHS's abstract and out-of-the-box creativity!)

She also pointed out all the little lego creatures. (They are cute soldiers and police officers, ambulance, other cars and red house on the top---I wonder whether small children are allowed in there--little girls and especially little boys would love to play with them while the parents enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. Even young and old newly dating couples would love the distraction the cafe may offer to ease their awkwardness.)

The blogger plans to feed her children the puppies her sausage and ham and say they are very lucky tonight. She takes pictures of some of GHS's art works. She is amazed at how such a young person drew so many pictures when she must be so busy. (Even the staircase that leads to the second floor terrace is built with step lights nicely illuminated at night.)

She plans to return during the weekend for another brunch, saying that their Columbian drip cofee is delicious. The location is across from the alley called "arte". (How an appropriately named alley for the home of a cute and comfortable art gallery cafe! I really wonder if the third floor of the Cafe Manolin is either GHS's office and/or her apartment. She does need an office to meet with potential new artists and art supporters and such. Don't you think? Love it .. love it!!!)

It's Confirmed! Gallery CAFE "Manolin" is Goo Hye Sun's

English Translation from susamerica@soompi.com:

Headline: 구혜선, 신예 작가 위한 갤러리 '마놀린' 오픈

Headline: Goo Hye Sun opens Gallery "Manolin" for the new artists

김수진 기자 | 2009/10/13 11:28 | 조회 234==Reporter Kim Soo Jin on October 13th, 2009

'팔방미인' 구혜선이 갤러리를 오픈해 눈길을 끈다.
All-around-beautiful Goo Hye Sun has opened a gallery and is attracting attention.

GHS has recently opened her Gallery Manolin in Seoul, Bang Bae Dong, Suh Rae Village (Mah Eul) and is currently exhibiting her art works and she herself is greeting/communicating with the public at this time.

GHS's agency reported on the 13th that, "In order to truly communicate with even more people, GHS has opened Gallery Manolin and is showing her own art work at this time."

In addition, GHS wants to provide the opportunity for the economically disadvantaged, new and unknown artists to showcase their work through Gallery Manolin either free of charge or with a minimum fee.

(This paragraph lists all her accomplishments so far and we all know them already.)

OMG, she continues to make me feel so good and so proud to call myself her ardent fan! She once said in the Literature with Voice program that, "If GHS can do it, anyone can do it!" She must have felt when she spoke her intentionally encouraging words that those words could also bring so much discouragement to many who do not have the suppport to back them up.

Well, wouldn't you know it!!! There is NO shred of hypocrisy or haughtiness in her words now, is there!!! She designed a place to support and further give hope to those artists who really need a chance to make their dream a reality. Bravo, GHS!!!

Goo Hye Sun's Artworks on Display at Gallery CAFÉ Manolin

From bellaangel012@soompi.com:

For anyone who is in or will go to Seoul, Korea and want to visit the cafe, here is the following information:

Name: Cafe Manolin (마놀린)

Address: 서울시 (Seoul sshhi) 반포동 (Ban Po Dong- neighborhood) 서래마을 (Seo reh mah eur) 107-28번지

Phonenumber for any inquiries: (02) 599-8845~6

From susamerica@soompi.com:

Soompies, please visit the blog that mintcar found. It introduces the Manolin Gallery Cafe in Seoul. The first floor is an art gallery and currently exhibiting GHS art. It hopes to show more and different artists' work. It only recently opened its doors to the public. GHS was there to show the place to the blogger and the entire interior was designed by GHS herself!

Right now it serves cofee and tea and dessert but is planning to expand its menu and supposedly the price is right that the blogger wants to return many time more for the taste, beauty and the atmosphere of the place and the art . People in DCinside are saying that the cafe actually may belong to GHS herself and managed by her sister.

The Manolin Cafe Gallery------ it is designed as if GHS cared about every inch and every little nooks and crannies. The blogger also mentioned how warm it felt in there with the afternoon sun peeking in. Even from all the pix, it gives me a feeling of being at a nice and cozy home where you can be just yourself there....

It also feels a little like not only a little girl's doll house (stuffed cat pillows and antique looking miniature furnitures) but also a little boy's play house (leggo pieces, Disney characters and I see an airplane on top of books.) It does not look fancy but simple and down to earth and yet ever so elegant in its own way--like the designer GHS herself.

Maybe she can even have a piano there at a corner somehwere. It kind of reminds me of the artsy Village or SoHo in NYC of USA where many artists and young people gather....and what a wonderful idea to have an art gallery on the first floor----it is a miniature museum with its own cafe upstairs.

From mint car@soompi.com
:

When I first saw the pictures of the cafe, I wanted to go there as well! It's quaint and cozy. (We don't really have those kind of cafes where I come from.) The furnitures are mismatching on purpose but surprisingly, they fit together as a whole... and there are toys and books to keep you occupied.
