2007, in King and I, a drama set in the 15th century Korean palace, she played a queen who led a very troubled life. Her acting ability was highly praised.
2009, the drama that created a boom in Taiwan and Japan,

C: How do you feel?
G: Because so many people love it, I feel very grateful.
C: How was filming for BOF?
G: It's difficult.very hard.
C: Really? What part was difficult?
G: hmm, it was filmed in winter so it was very cold.
C: Ahh~
G: the scenes where I had to be bullied were bit hard.
C: Ah~~being cold is hard for you?
G: Oh yes, it is hard.
C: What did you do to deal with cold?
G: We had this small portable heater. I would put couple of can-coffee on the heater to warm them up. Then, I would keep those cans in my pockets.
C: Ahh, that was a good idea. (smile)

C: When did you make a debut?
G: Formally, I made a debut when I was 20 years old through Nonstop5, which was a sitcom.
C: sitcom?
G: Yes, that is how I made a debut.
C: Ahh! is that so.

C: So, how long has it been since since your debut?
G: 5 years.

G: Since the whole world seems to be having a hard time now, I would like to play a role who can give a message of hope to others.

G: I go for work and also to travel

G: This friend is not Japanese but it is a friend whom I have known since junior high school and now this friend lives in Japan.

G: yes, I like it too much...

G: I like ramyun...I really like Natto.

Things I wanted to ask actress GHS:

GHS is planning to crank up her full length film in November and it is a story of a cellist and music. When did she start writing her script? Did she complete the casting process? Nobody knows. Not too long ago when she published her novel, exhibited her art work and came out with her music CD--nobody knew much about it either. Her working process has always been very quiet. That is why, to most people, GHS is not an easily understandable text.

(There are writings on this article usually next to GHS pictures that advertises CeCe clothes and how much they cost. I am not translating that. But I will translate some of the excerpts next to her pictures that are related to GHS.)

Only few years ago, the one qualifier word, Ulzzang explained everything about GHS the actress. Her face is full of mischiefs and curiosity behind those huge blinking eyes. But she gives me a correction:

I used to say that I can do anything: from the NN5's energetic and 'uh ri bah ri'=goofy? screenwriter, to untainted Yanbin female of the Pure Heart of 19, to Queen Yune who aroused 'gah chae' in King and I. Yes, I tried my hardest, but I also have lonely memories of not having things work out the way I wanted. In the beginning, I thought that things worked out well for me because I have all the luck and because I am special. I did not realized just how many people worked so hard to help me.Especially through KIng and I, my self-conceit and pride broke off. Because I made a debut at young age, I may have matured faster.

In 2009, GHS again solidified her place as an actress by playing Geum Jandi who, having gone through the torture of being abused and bullied end up being loved by the F4. While her popularity soared among the mass, her TV appearance time gradually decreased. Most celebrities' pattern is to be mindful of how their audience is feeling about them and to adjust themselves to maintain their status. Same pattern does not apply to GHS. In the middle of such heated popularity, GHS walks out showing one at a time new and different sides to her. After the big hit of BOF, she could have easily just enjoyed the unending adulation.

However, she quickly gargled the taste of popularity out of her and published her first novel, TANGO. Then she opened her own private exhibition of her illustrations and art work. Then she produced her New Age musical CD. And, in November, she is to hold the megaphone as a director. (We know that this article was written before the her movie was postponed.) Now, nobody can really predict her future. She may be able to think about what she has to do tomorrow, but she cannot make a guaratee or positive assertion about her future. She is curious herself what would be her future. Only thing that she feels sure is that the process will be mighty interesting. (She is still positive, GREAT!)

I always work with a smile on my face. I feel more the benefit from working really hard. On the one hand, living so intensely may seem empty, but I feel so alive. Making movie is about constantly being face to face with other people around you all the time--to communicate, to fight, to have conferences---I really enjoy that process.

Carefully, the reporter asked GHS about her new movie. Firstly, it is a mystery. The story deals with the endless desires of artistic people. They want to fulfill their intense desires yet the desire is endlesss and meaningless conflicts arise. People die. Towards the end, even after the death of a lover, the lead actor's frame of mind to still need to play the cello is revealed. It may not be your typical Korean movie that one is used to--it is slightly manic. (smiles)

After BOF, people are again acknowledging her as the actress. So, WHY does she have to choose a difficult road of being a director? As I became more and more famous as an actress, whether consciously or subconciously, my routine has turned into hiding myself from the public. The more I talked, sometimes the more it worked aginst me. If I play a bright and energetic character, I had to stay in that character no matter where I am. If I play a sad character, I could not easily laugh anywhere either. The character that I play is not the real and entire me. If I show the public many other aspects of me, would they be more confused? I want to be more free with myself and the public. How long do I have live my life by restraining and abstaining from being myself? The more and more I thought about it, the lonelier I became.

To comfort my loneliness, I scribbled, painted and composed. However, those are jobs for only one person to do. I wanted to meet people more. So, I went out. I took my work with me. Actually, even before I became an actress, I wrote, painted and composed. Those senior actors who have worked me have seen my work and have encouraged me to not just keep it as a hobby but to consider writing books and to do art exhibitions. Under such positive encouragement, she worked hard giving up sleep. That is how she came out with her work to the public.

I know that I lacked tremendously, but I maintained the cocky attitude that I wanted to do what I wanted to do no matter what. Luckily, many people helped me. Some friends worried for me. They cautioned me to first do more acting, really sharpen the acting skills, to try for movie roles. Then, slowly with more experience, try other challenges. I thought about it. However, when would there be the right time for me to know that I am ready to challenge myself new. What if such readiness never come my entire life and I die? By nature, we human beings are not even perfect to start with!

(No time like the present when one has the strong desires. US Nike should have capitalized on GHS's attitude about life: Life is just too short. This is it. No time for rehearsals. Just Do It! And leave the results to the wind! Love and enjoy the process of making your life so very rich and full! I just love her!)

I decided to give myself some room. I told myself that I am doing it because I want to do it, not because I am so good at it. A person who already lives her life so intensely may bring out even more authentic colors of her being by adding a flavor of something new. To make one scene, I fight fiercely with the staff. We may even fight more than 12 times a day.

Then I would say, (We all know what happens to those sand castles when the tide comes in. Right? GHS seems to saying that she felt stifled as an actress but more free and less lonley as a director. She broke FREE. I hope that even if she continues an an actress, she will take roles that make her feel more free and limitless so that we will still see her on screen, not only behind the screen. What a human being!)

Now, this is the start for me. I already hung out all my work out there for the public. I am sure that while filming, from time to time, I will look at some of the results and say to myself, I am going crazy...What am I to do now! But, you know what, I know positively for sure that it will be nothing but very interesting!

Goo Hye Sun' Cheerful Caretaker and Jang Jin's Good Morning Mr. President were screened. Jang Jin was saying that, for his next film maybe in December, he may want to do Goo Hye Sun-style movie where he would be more free and adventurous, like carry a camera around with few good people. He really wants to make a film that would make him feel like he really loves making films.

(His statement reminds me of what Yoo Ji Tae said in AISFF. He makes short films because he is not necessarily thinking about commercial profit but because it gives him his self-respect and pride as an artist. Goo Hye Sun also mentioned about her attraction to making short films--she can be outrageously imaginative without consideration to too many rules and conventions.)

Director Jang Jin also said that he had been talking a lot with Goo Hye Sun while waiting and he learned that she is getting busy to make a full-length film. People clapped her for it. She said that she had been talking with Director Jang to ask for his help. She is planning a musical mystery and she will work hard at it now. She said that the hardest thing about her short film is that, even though she did not intend for her movie to be about religion, she was getting some heat from the religious groups.

▶ 평소 편안한 스타일로 다닌다. 평소에도 청바지에 티셔츠를 즐겨 입는다. 어찌 보면 프로의식이 없을 수도 있는데 드레스를 차려 입는 게 어색하다. 어찌해야할지를 잘 모르겠다. I like everyday comfortable clothing, such as jeans and t-shirts. Maybe I do not have that "professional counsciousness". I just feel awakward in formal dresses.

내가 과거에 들은 얘기로는 영화제 드레스코드가 청바지에 흰 티셔츠라는 얘기를 들은 적이 있다. 영화제를 위해서 꾸미는 배우를 보면 내가 봐도 즐겁고 예쁘다. 어찌됐건 나의 경우에는 시민들과 편안하게 다가가고 싶은 마음에서 편안한 복장을 택했다. From what I heard before about attending movie screenings, the dress code was jeans and white t-shirt. I also love watching other movie stars come out dressed so pretty. However, for me, I prefer to feel closer and comfortable with the public and that is why I dressed more for comfort.

드 레스나 노출된 의상을 입으면 배우와의 거리감이 느껴질 것 같다. 조금 더 편안하기 위해서였다. 사실 그날 또 갑자기 가게 됐다. 안성기 선배님이 전날 전화로 오라고 하셨다. 스타일리스트 분들과도 얘기할 시간도 없었다. 그래서 원래 입던 옷을 입고 갔다. I feel that I am putting distance between myself and the public if I wear formal dresses with too much exposure. Actually I was not planning to attend the event. The day before, Ahn Sung Gi sunbaenim invited me to come. I did not even have time to consult a stylist. So I just wore what I have.

집에서 바지입고 왔다고 회사에 말씀드렸다. 방송에서는 워스트, 베스트를 나눈다. 하지만 선배님들이 예뻐라 해주셨다. 원래 여배우들이 드레스를 입으면 서로 비교가 되기 때문에 함께 있는 것을 싫어하시는데 나와 함께 입고 싶어 하시더라. I did inform the YG about what I wore. I know that the media will divide the attendees into the best and the worst dressers. However, sunbaenims still welcomed me without any complaints. As you know, actresses hate to be together in these events because they are constantly compared. However, many wanted to be with me.

옷의 가격? 사실 지금 마시고 있는 음료수 값을 다 합쳐도 미치지 못하는 저가의 옷이다. 브랜드 옷을 잘 안 입는다. 싫어하는 건 아니다. 편안한 옷을 직접 만들기도 한다. 워스트로 뽑힐지언정 편안하게 입는 게 좋다. 그게 나만의 생각이다. the price of my clothes at the PIFF? Actually even if we add up all the prices of the beverages on this table, the price of my clothes won't add up to the amount. It is not that I do not like brand name clothings. It is just that I don;t wear them often. sometimes I make my own comfortable clothing. If I were going to be picked as the worst dresser, I might as well dress very comfortably. That was my thought.

▶ 어릴 때는 매일 생각이 다르기 때문에 정리가 안됐다. 과거 써 놓았던 것을 지금 가지고 있는데, 지금 생각하지 못했던 일을 생각했더라. 순수한 생각, 기발한 생각을 했더라. 사회생활을 하다 보니 점점 현실적으로 변하는 것 같다. 과거에는 혼자 생각했다면 요즘에는 함께 생각을 나누게 되는 것 같다.

-요리하는 모습이나 춤추는 모습은 상상이 안 된다.(About cooking and dancing..I covered it.)

▶무엇이든 일단 하는 게 중요하다고 생각한다. 얻는 게 있을 테니까. 댄스는 일단 민망하고 뭐라고 해야 할지. 내 분야는 아닌 것 같다. 내가 뭐든 달려드는 스타일이긴 하지만 댄스는 아니다.

요 리? 과거 남자친구가 있을 때 샌드위치를 만들어서 도시락도 싸고 했다. 처음에는 남자친구가 고마워하고 맛있다고 해서 자신감이 생겼었는데, 어느 날부터인가 그냥 사먹자고 하더라. (her story about her old bf who initially liked her sandwiches and then later wanted to buy food.)

-일러스트가 화제가 됐다. 그림을 그릴 때의 감정변화가 있나. Your illustrations were big news. Does drawing changes your mood?

▶ 떨어지는 낙엽만 봐도 눈물이 날 때가 있는 법이지 않나. 나도 우울할 때가 있다. 결국에는 긍정적으로 돌아오더라. 나의 경우 우울할 때는 그림을 안 그렸다. 우울할 때 그림을 그리면 더 우울하다. 일단은 정신이 혼미하면 손가락에 집중을 할 수 없다. 볼펜 일러스트는 섬세해야한다. 술에 취하면 집중을 못한다. We all sometimes get teary-eyed even if we may see the leaves fall. I also have days when I am depressed. Ultimately I do become positive. For me, I cannot draw when I am depressed. If I do, I get even more depressed. If my mind is not clear, I cannot concentrate enough to make my fingers work do their job. Ball pen illustratons require detail work. If I am intoxicated, I cannot focus.

-생활 속에서 실천하고 있는 환경운동은 무엇인가. (being an environmentalist----I covered it.)

▶좋게 말하면 실천이고 나를 위해서 하는 일이 있다. 알러지가 좀 있어서 세제로 빨래를 잘 못한다. 이물질이 묻은 부분만 세제를 사용한다. 그냥 물빨래한다. 그게 좋더라.

생활 속에서 진득하게 실천 하는 건 없는데 양심껏 살려고 노력한다. 그게 가장 중요하다고 생각한다. 언제나 하는 것은 자동차 불 켜 놓은 차는 문자를 보내거나 전화를 걸어서 꺼달라고 한다.

-구혜선이 생각하는 고 정승혜 영화사대표님에 대해 말해달라. GHS's thoughts on the late Representative Jung Seung Hae:

▶ 존경하는 존재다. 여장부셨다. 내가 하고 싶은 영화, 영화사 대표를 하셨던 멋있는 사람이셨다. 무엇하나 놓치고 가지 않는다. I respect her being. She was a heroin, an Amazon. She was the representative of the movie production company that made my movie. She was amazing. She never misses anything.

돌아가시고 나니까. 음..살아 계실 때는, 만날 때만 보는 거 아니냐. 돌아가시니까 만나지 않아도 하늘에서 다 보고 계신 거 아니냐. After she passed away, uhm..when she was alive, I only saw her when I met her. Now that she has passed, even if I do not see her, she is constantly seeing me from above.

지금 내가 장편 영화를 준비하고 있는데, 정 대표님과 일 하셨던 분들이 지금 나와 다 같이 일하고 있다. Everybody that worked with Representative Jung now work with me on my full-length movie.

전에는 일 끝나면 끝났다고 전화를 했었는데 지금은 내가 전화를 걸지 않아도 다 알고 있다. 이제는 (고 정승혜대표가) 나를 다 보고 있는 사람이 되어서 '부끄럽게 살지 말아야겠다'는 생각을 한다. 꿈에도 나타나서 '똑바로 살아라'고 위협하시는 분이 됐다. Previously, I used to call her when I was done with work. Now, even if I don't call her, she knows all. Because she watches me and over me constantly now, I cannot live my life shamefully. She is a kind of person who would even appear in my dreams to threaten me to live straight.

저를 돌아보게 되는 거울이다. 사실 좀 짜증이 날 때도 있다. 아 내가 좀 잘못해도 '다보고 있을 것 아니야' 뭐 이런 생각 때문이다. 왜 돌아가셔서...음 그래서 더 양심껏 살고 있다. She is my mirror of reflection. Actually sometimes I get irritated. She will see me even if I do make mistakes. (She will be constantly there whether she likes it or not!) Why did she have to go....uhm...so I try to live my life even more conscientiously.

▶부끄러운 얘기다. 안간 지 2년 됐다. 예전에 열심히 다녔다.

▶추천하고 싶은 여행지는 가보진 않았는데 마라도다. 꼭 한번 가보고 싶다. Domestically, Mirado (an island near Jejudo, I think)

-해외는?

▶해외여행? 파리는 한번 가보고 '와'했다. '여기 뭐지?' 이런 생각이 들었었다. 호주 사막 캠핑카 여행도 해보고 싶다. Overseas, She went to Paris once and was amazed by it. (I wonder if this was when she did the MV with Taebin.) She also wants to go to the dessert in Australia in a camping car. (I know she also said she wanted to go to South Pole. She was planning a trip with a friend--maybe the camping car trip to Autralia?)

▶ 꿈은 진짜 많이 꾼다. 이상형은 매번 달라지는 것을 느낀다. 어렸을 때는 잘생긴 남자를 만나고 싶었다. 그다음은 성격. 그다음은 능력. 그 다음은 나를 이해할 수 있는 사람이 좋다고 생각하게 됐다. I really dream a lot. My ideal man has changed over the years. When I was young, I ony wanted to meet a good-looking man. Then, his personality became more important, then his ability and then, his ability to understand me.

만나서 밥을 먹다가도 나를 좀 챙겨주는 사람을 만났으면 좋겠다는 생각이 들기도 한다. 나는 배신을 당해서 헤어진 적이 있다. 4년 만난 남자였다. 남친이 바람나서 헤어졌다. 사실 헤어지는 순간까지도 행복했었다. 그래서 당시 굉장히 힘들었다. 그래서 나에게 의리를 지키는 남자였음 좋겠다는 생각을 했다. Even if we have meals together, I sometimes would like someone who will take care of me and be considerate of me. I was betrayed and had to end the relationship. After 4 years. The blogger is Kaga and he is one of the men who is wearing a blazer and white shirt inside. He says he is of same age as GHS. He also summarized what GHS said most of the time, so sometimes I may just summarize him.

Kaga traveled far to participate in the Star News and he is excited. These participants seem to be all owners of blogs and had to come an hour before the actual interview time (1 PM on October 21, 2009 at Café Manolin) in order to go over the preliminaries and agenda before meeting GHS.

I am sure you gathered from the pix that these bloggers’ questions are written inside orange, folded papers and arranged inside a cup. GHS is to pick these folded papers one at a time and answer the questions written on them in order. I guess that is why contestants had to submit their questions ahead of time.

Kaga, the blogger, says that bloggers got along fine before the meeting of GHS and one of them is suppose to be a ‘power-blogger’ from the Naver site. He did not have enough time to thoroughly look at the Café and he is especially interested in looking at GHS paintings and promises himself to return before the paintings are taken down on October 31, 2009. '

Kaga is touched by GHS’ first greeting to the bloggers: “Have you even eaten before you came today?” (Such questions about whether someone ate or not is a basic Asian courtesy of being concerned about others. Right?) Kaga feels almost immediately touched by her question which indicate to him that GHS is a sincere and considerate person. He describes GHS as “full of tender smell of people about her”. (Korean ideom which may mean that she is very relatable? He also senses traces of GHS in every nooks and crannies and corners of the Café Manolin. (I think he sensed correctly!)

Finally, she came. Red hoodie, grey skinny jeans and black boots of the Shinhwa days. So much more casual(?) than I expected. But, underneath that hood is such a white, pretty face that I almost sighed.

In Kaga’s blog, GHS’s first question is different from another one.

First Question: What is GHS’ dress code?

GHS says that she knows that she has to wear a dress in certain occasions and certain places. But she feels very awkward in a dress. Normally, she prefers to wear casual clothing which she may either make it herself or buy off the rack at the Dong Dae Moon Market (the famous market in Seoul that offers anything for less. If I am not mistaken, I think KHJ’s parents have a shop there. Right?

Another blogger writes that GHS said that she likes clothes that do not expose her and that s/he really likes that about her.)Why?GHS feels that casual clothing that she chooses to wear have more variety and uniqueness to them.What does your agency say about that?She smiles softly while she says that her Agency does not really like it. However, she says that even in formal occasions like movie screenings she prefers casual dressing because it makes her feel closer to the general public. She proudly notes that her sunbaes have liked her concept of dressing. Kaga comments that this is one of GHS’s charms.

Second Question: How do you manage all your ideas?

Kaga is very interested in how someone like GHS, who does so many activities, manages all her ideas, as he himself often looks for efficient management ideas for his field of design. “I usually post memos to myself.”With another smile, GHS says that she usually goes back to these memos and organizes them one to two pages. When she looks at her old memos, she recognizes her innocence of those old days and sometimes feels embarrassed.

In the past, she would try to think and ponder over her ideas alone, but now, she often discusses her ideas with others. That way, she develops her ideas even further and even learns more from that experience. Then, GHS turns around to face the picture frames to say that she hung these frames one by one herself, hanging from a ceiling. She spoke about it so excitedly that Kaga is reminded of the child-like GHS.

She just started to hang one picture frame at a time and then suddenly such a design resulted. “Don’t you think an idea also comes from un-planning?” (I really get the feeling that GHS is very proud of her picture arrangement and I feel she is also saying something much deeper here---i.e. I don’t always have to know what I am doing in advance or where I am going beforehand or always control the future in order to make something beautiful. That is my interpretation.

What do you think, soompies? Everything that she says or does seems like a piece of art, doesn’t it?) Then, Kaga comments that “her talk moves to the mountain” (I think he means she digresses away from the topic at hand)..Kaga sees how thoroughly GHS enjoys conversing and realizes how much she really enjoys the company of people.

Third Question: Cooking and Dancing. If these are the only two left, which one would you choose first?

She starts to laugh and says that she does not think these questions are for her. She is not good in either of them. Then, she says that, whatever it is, it can work if I try them. Even if I fail, I will always gain something, learn something. If I only make excuses or blame others, I cannot look at myself. Kaga comments that he is again realizing GHS as an earnest/serious person. “Whatever it may be, it can work out if you have a positive mindset.” Kaga seems to have been stimulated/energized by GHS’ statement because he repeats what she says to himself. (Isn’t it interesting? Isn’t that what GHS wants from the general public?)

Fourth Question: You recently made the opening trailer for AISFF. Could you explain your concept?

Kaga was excited because it is his question.Actually he was hoping for his other question to be picked but he was OK with it. Kaga saw a TV program where GHS and Director Kim Ki Duk came out to present the trailer for 7th AISFF. Even the Director Kim stated that the trailer was very difficult to understand, so Kaga wanted to hear directly from GHS who directed the trailer.

GHS: “I feel that short films must have an outrageous and lawless element in them. That is what I tried to express in the trailer.”Due to budget shortage, I regret that I could not express everything that I hoped. I wanted to send out the feel of media art and to tell a story of “love” within it. Through the female actress, she wanted to express the feelings of love and hate and to draw out those feelings through the images. Something outrageous! Kaga wonders how much and how deeply GHS must have pondered for the short few seconds of the film.

Fifth: What do you think about when you look around?

She smiles and says that she says what she feels at the moment, but tries to be positive. Kaga comments that GHS is a person full of laughter. She says that she only draws when she feels happy not when she is down. Others chime in to say that, “when depressed, it is good to have a drink” and “when depressed, don’t you feel more like writing?” To those comments, GHS agrees with them while clapping, “That’s right! That’s right!”

GHS also adds that, in the past, she has erased or burnt some of her old writings for fear that other people might find them.

Sixth: (I do not know what ‘kosprae’ means) Is there a type of ‘kosprae’ costume that you are interested in trying?

This question stems from BOF when GHS wore the maid uniform costume (Another blogger said that her maid uniform was a hit in the Korean internet.).

GHS: “Actually,,,,I lean towards men’s things. So I collect men’s clothing and small and particular items and knick knacks usually associated with men. (That is why she has so many lego toys and airplanes and such in her café? I have a feeling the media may have a field day with this statement from GHS. Hahaha) So, the ‘kosprae’ that she really wants to try are: “eating like a horse”, “canteen robot”, “That’s right! That’s right! A fresh man!” ( I wonder if ‘fresh man’ mean a college freshmen? maybe something famous in Korea? Or just a man who is fresh? You know?,,,didn't she already put on the fresh man costume at the PIFF?)

Another person asks GHS, how about a ‘Snow White’? and GHS responds with a smile, “if an occasion arises....”

Seventh: GHS as environmentalist: what do you do to decrease CO2?

GHS thought for a while and says, “To be good, I can say it is for the environment, but I do this for myself—I do not use detergents. I try to let my conscience be my guide. She saw an elderly gentleman recycle and now she recycles also. What she does do persistently is, if she sees the automobile lights on, she would either text or call the person to turn off the lights.” So, Kaga comments to all those who may park near Kang Nam to turn on their car lights on purpose to see if they will get a warning from GHS! (What a kidder!!!)

The one question that I am sure everyone is interested in is the question about her ideal type and the type of person she wants to be with:

1. Question: GHS's ideal type and her ideal marriage life?

GHS- Her ideal type continues to change said she. From appearance then to personality then to man's ability/capability then to someone who is able to understand and have consideration for her, hence her ideal continues to change.

When people work in the same field, there is that constant competition/comparison of one's success, etc (basically there is always a competitive streak going on); and if working in completely different fields, that person is unable to understand that other person's line or work and what goes along with it and it could become difficult (basically she is trying to say that she would prefer a person working in the entertainment industry as that person is able to understand her line of work and all that goes along with it like the crazy working hours, schedules, kissing other people as their line of work, etc).

In complete honesty and bluntly put, she said that her ex of 4 years cheated on her. (I'm assuming her ex was not in the same line of work she was- which ex I do not know?)The highlighted part said: I do not like a person who just gives, there has to be a mutual understanding and she would like someone who is loyal.

edit: 2: Although I think "determination" could be part of the word "capability/ability" because if one doesn't have that, how can someone fully realize their potential without any work but for the sake of purity in translating, I'm changing it.

2. Question: A place that she recommends traveling to?

Answer: Mari Island (?- an island, Japan?)- she immediately responded. She has never been there and would definitely love to go there. A place that she would recommend going to and would like to go herself is the South Pole and to the desert. Her friends and herself are presently planning to go there. And the place she had been to several times (had fun) was Paris. Her favorite thing to do is to travel all around Korea.

3. Question: Where do you go to for your skincare?

When Isao Sasaki (I will abbreviate him as IS) heard GHS' music for the very first time, he said to himself, “이렇게 재능 있는 사람이 있다니, 용서할 수 없다!”=="How can there be such a talented person, I cannot forgive this."

They both are blood type A and could communicate through music and few simple English words. IS can understand some simpler Korean expressions.

IS: "For an amateur, her composition was great and her musical motif were unique." "Even though GHS told me that I can edit her compositon the way I saw fit, it does not mean that I made tons of changes. I made minot changes to suit my style more. But we would interchange ideas by playing our various thoughts on the piano to finalize the composition."

IS: "I tend to be on the shy side until I get to know the person well. (sounds like GHS also) I get even more shy when I meet younger people." IS also mentions that one of his friends who is a BOF fan was so envious of his meetings with GHS.

IS: "Whenever we met to work on the music, I would at times notice HS drawing with her pen and realized the meaning of her drawings. Whenever she has time, HS organizes her thoughts and put into drawing her thougths, That is how her drawing became my album jacket. Only thing that gets IS embarrassed about the jacket is that the color is pink." (hahaha)

GHS: As we all know, she showcased her other talents than acting in order to make a movie. "I decided to produce my own music for the movie basically because of the cost. Reducing cost is very important."

When asked if she has other area in which she wants to challenge herself, she said that: "There isn't any more new things that I want to try. I just want to continue doing this one part that really interest me--the movie-making."

Then she was asked about her dream, GHS said: “결혼해서 좋은 엄마가 되고 싶은 게 저의 최종적인 꿈이에요.”="My ultimate dream is to get married and become a good mom."

The writer comments that there is no awkwardness in GHS even though she is playing piano with the famous master musician. GHS simply and humbly states that it is because IS is so good at covering for her when they play together.

Working together with GHS is also a new kind of experience for IS but he found the experience so very interesting and enjoyable that he would love to do it again if good opportniity arises. Although so different in many ways, they make beautiful music together.

Like a Doll! Goo Hye Sun is Very Gentle and Feminine

Have you ever watched "Boys over Flowers" ? Goo Hye Sun - the actress who took the role Geum Jandi came to Japan in September to promote the film with the crew. I had a chance to interview her for the magazine "Hallyu PIA", this interview will be in Autumn Issue along with the interview of Lee Min Ho.

Last December when the cast of BOF was announced, she made many people impressed when appearing in a white dress which made her looked like an angel. As I saw that, I thought “a fragile girl” which is somehow different from original character. I didn’t think that she could eat a full-mouth of rice like she did in the film, it’s really impossible! However, she was mainly caught a lot of attention because of her beauty and her femininity.

[He was impressed by GHS at the December Press Conference when she appeared in a mini dress showing her white, thin legs....He thought she looked too fragile and feminine to play Makino. After he saw GHS play the role in BOF, he was amazed by her acting and GHS definitely got his attention!]

She listened to my questions and answered them straightly. In my eyes, she’s such a young and lovely girl just like a doll, but after having time talking I realized a strong potential inside this girl, seems like having hidden deep side of a real woman.

Following the end of the interview was the time for photo shooting! She stood up and wrote the word “ Hallyu PIA”(in Japanese) by herself.

It’s my first time meeting Masu Yomi (the photographer) . She seemed like rather stressful (laugh). “Hora, let’s make it begin” Let’s look at the photos of Hye Sun when standing in front of the camera… She’s indeed look like a lovely doll…
I looked at her and uttered 「So lovely….look like a doll…」

[After the interview, it was time for the photo session. She got up from her chair, but she was still browsing through the summer issue of Hallyu PIA magazine. She also browsed through BOF pamphlets prepared for the press conference purpose, saying that she has never seen them before. Then she got her make-up and codi unnies and told them while laughing, "let's hurry, hurry, photo session." One Korean translator told me that "Hye Sun is blood type A and so are the staff and so we are all very quiet people."

그 의 행보는 확실히 특이하다. 드라마 한편으로 한국은 물론 아시아권의 스타로 떠오른 후, 모두들 그가 절정의 인기에 힘입어 TV 광고의 명실상부한 ‘퀸’으로 등극하거나 껑충 뛰어오른 개런티를 받으며 새로운 작품에 출연하게 될 것으로 예상했었다.
Her reported activities are truly special. After the drama, her fame spread not only in Korea but also throughout Asia. We all expected her to follow the usual path of such stars like her--that she will either be enthroned to a seat of a commercial queen or, receiving a guarantee of huge success, soon star in another acting production.

그를 좀 더 알고 싶어서 일러스트픽션이란 타이틀이 붙은 소설 ‘탱고’와 음반 ‘숨’을 읽고 들었다. 그의 내면은 생각보다 복잡해 보였다. 두 작품에서는 스타가 아닌 한 여성의 예민한 감수성과 외로움이 묻어나왔다.
I wanted to understand her better. So I read her book, TANGO and listened to her music CD Breathe . I felt that her inner life seems much more complex than I ever expected. Through her CD and novel, I uncovered not the star GHS but a one woman with an acute sensibility and loneliness.

첫인상은 드라마와 화장품, 베이커리 광고 등에서 수없이 보아왔던 예쁜 이미지 그대로다.
My first impression of GHS is that she is as pretty in real life as all the images that I have seen her in dramas and CF commercials of make-up, bakery and more.

하지만 그는 불편할 수도 있는 질문들에 주저하지 않고 거침없이 대답했다. 자신이 가진 재능과 부족함을 누구보다 잘 알고 있었으며, 유명연예인으로서 누릴 수 있는 유리한 조건과 한계도 명확하게 인식하고 있었다. 무엇보다도 그는 하고 싶은 일 많고 도전정신 강한 이십 대 젊은이, 그 자체였다. “취미생활을 상업화한다는 지적이 신경쓰이지 않는가”란 질문에 그는 “전혀 개의치 않는다”면서 시원시원하게 웃었다.

“ 그런 말엔 한 번도 신경 써본 적이 없어요. ‘연기자 구혜선’이란 타이틀 때문에 제가 하는 일이 화려해 보이리란 점은 인정해요. 오랫동안 그림을 그리고 작곡을 해왔는데 다른 사람들과 공유해보고 싶다는 생각으로 발표했을 뿐이에요. 그리고 이 모든 작업이 곧 촬영에 들어갈 영화에 필요한 것들이었구요. 세상에 완벽한 사람은 없잖아요. 누구나 자기 인생의 주인공은 바로 자기 자신인 만큼, 주어진 여건에서 해보고 싶은 것을 시도할 기회를 찾는 게 중요하다고 생각해요. 물론 제가 연예인인 만큼 남들보다 많은 기회를 얻을 수는 있겠지요. 하지만 요즘엔 디지털기술의 발달 덕분에 자신을 표현할 기회와 무료 공간이 참 많아졌어요. 만약 연예인이 되지 않았어도, 전 제 작품을 발표할 수 있는 길을 모색했을 겁니다. 제 또래 젊은이들이 “구혜선도 하는데 나도 한번 해볼 수 있겠다”는 용기를 얻으면 좋겠어요.”
GHS: "I never worried or stressed over that type of statements. I admit that people may think that because I am an actress, that what I do may seem all glamorous. However, I have enjoyed drawing and composing for a very long time. I just wanted to share what I love with other people and that is why I decided to go public with my work.

Also, everything I have been doing are the necessary ingredients which will be entered into the movie that I am planning to make. There is no such thing as a perfect person in this world. We all must become the main characters or the stars of our lives. We are all different and start differently. But from whatever is our circumstances, it is very important that we find the opportunities to try out what we want to do.

Of course as an actress, I probably have more opportunities than others. However, due to the benefits of modern day digital magic and advanced technology, we can all easily create free opportunities and space to amply express our creativities and talents to the mass. Even if I was not an actress, I am pretty sure that I would have looked for various ways to display my work. I sincerely hope that my young peers will be encouraged to find their paths--and to boldly think that, if GHS can do it, they can certainly try it."

그는 피아노를 독학으로 마스터했다는 자신의 사연을 들은 사람들이 ‘늦은 나이이지만 피아노를 다시 배워볼까’하는 생각을 갖게 된다면 보람된 일이 아니겠느냐고 말했다. 실제 한 팬으로부터 그런 편지를 받고 너무나 기뻤다는 것.
She mastered playing piano pretty much on her own. GHS was so very happy when she received a letter from a fan who learned that GHS learned to play the piano on her own. This encouraged the fan to return to playing piano again.

“인천에서 태어나 청소년기를 보냈는데 집안형편이 결코 넉넉한 편이 아니었어요. 피아노교습소에 다니고 싶었는데 경제적 여유가 없어서 남들에게 짬짬이 배워서는 종이판에 그린 건반으로 연습하곤 했던 게 생각나네요. 동네 반장 집 아주머니가 저희 집에 중고 피아노를 물려주셨는데, 그것으로 피아노 연주를 독학하다시피 했죠. 그래서 프로 연주가처럼 연주를 잘하지는 못합니다. 작곡은 초등학교 5학년 때부터 시작해서 오늘날까지 이어졌구요. 청소년기에는 당시 대부분의 아이들이 그랬던 것처럼 HOT에 푹 빠져서 가수가 되길 열망했지요. 그 시절을 생각하면 지금의 전 정말 용 된 셈이에요. 제 자신이 바로 희망의 산 증거가 아니겠어요. 하하.”
GHS: "I was born and grew up in Inchun. My family's financial situation was not adequate. I could not afford to receive lessons from a proper teacher. I remember learning bits and pieces from others about how to play the piano and practice on a piano scale drawn on a piece of paper. A neighborhood lady (a mother of a class president) gave my family a used piano and I made an excellent use of the piano. That is why I cannot play the piano like a prefessional pianist. I started to compose since I was a 5th grader until today. Like most teenagers, I was also very much a fan of HOT and desperately wanted to become a singer. If I look back to where I came from, I guess I did do well. I feel like I am my own evidence of living out my hopes. hahaha.

구 혜선은 자신이 ‘용’된 비결로 ‘무엇이든 남에게 잘 물어보는 습관’을 꼽았다. ‘꽃보다 남자’에서 딸보다 더 철딱서니 없는 엄마로 등장했던 임예진 ‘선배’와 촬영순서를 기다리며 서로 좋아하는 화가와 그림에 대해 이야기하다가 어떻게 하면 전시회를 열 수 있는지 물어보았고, 영화사 ‘아침’ 의 고 정승혜 대표에겐 어떻게 하면 영화를 직접 연출할 수 있는지 물어보다가 용기를 얻어 소설과 단편을 완성할 수 있었다는 이야기다. 소속사인 YG엔터테인먼트의 양현석 대표를 붙잡고는 CD 내는 방법을 물어봤단다.
GHS feels that her tendency to ask any and many questions to others helped her to come this far in her life. At BOF filming site, while standing by for the next scene, GHS would talk with her then actress-mother Im Ye Jin about their shared interest in art and artists. Then GHS would ask I'm about how a person goes about having an art exhibit. She asked the Morning Production Company's late Rep Jung Seung Hae about how one goes about producing and directing a movie on her own. Eventually, I gained the courage to complete a novel and a short film. She even asked YG Enttertainment's President Yang Hyun Suk about how one goes about making a music CD. (Well, we all know the rest is history!!)

“ 자존심이 강한 편이어서 원래는 남에게 부탁하는 것을 잘 못했어요. 엔터테인먼트 쪽 일을 하다 보니 성격이 적극적으로 좀 바뀌었지요. 지금은 저보다 경험 많은 선배나 전문가들을 붙잡고 무조건 ‘가르쳐주세요’합니다. 부정적으로 생각하기 시작하면 아무것도 할 수 없어요. 기회를 놓치면 제 인생만 손해죠.”
GHS: "I am basically a very proud person that I was not very good at asking for help in the beginning. While working in the entertainment field, I became more proactive. Even now, I would, without any reservation, ask for help and counsel from more experienced sunbaes. I ask them to teach me. If I start to think negatively, then I cannot do anything. If I lose an oportunity, I only bring loss to my own life.

그 는 ‘알고 보니 이 세상에서 만나는 모든 사람들이 다 내게 가르침을 주고 도와주는 사람이더라’란 인생 다 산 사람 같은 말도 했다. 부모부터 선생님, 일터에서 만나는 선배 동료 후배, 소속사 식구 등 수많은 사람들의 도움 덕분에 오늘날의 자신이 존재할 수 있게 됐다는 것. 그 중 인천에서 보낸 중·고등학교 시절 그림 과외교습 선생님을 구혜선은 ‘내 인생의 가장 중요한 멘토’로 꼽았다.
GHS speaks as if she has lived a very long life already. "Everybody that I meet in my life has been and will be able to teach me and help me." My parents, my teachers, every person that I meet at work and filming locations, my Agency family and so many, many people have guided and helped me. Without every single one of them, my existence could not have been possible. Among them, the most important person and mentor in my life is my art teacher from the junior and senior high school days."

“ 제게 오히려 맛난 것을 많이 사주시면서 그림을 가르쳐주셨던 분인데, 그 선생님을 못 만났으면 그림에 대해 눈을 뜨지 못했고 지금처럼 이것저것 많은 시도를 해볼 용기를 못 냈을 겁니다. 제게 선물로 주신 책 ‘레오나르도 다빈치처럼 생각하기’에 사물을 관찰하고 아이디어를 발전시키는 방법 등이 잘 나와있었어요. 예를 들어서 그림을 그린 다음에 거울에 비춰서 애초 생각했던 것과 또 다른 이미지를 발견해보는 것 등등이요. 밑줄 쳐 가면서 정말 열심히 읽었는데, 선생님과 이 책이 준 가르침이 지금도 큰 힘이 됩니다.”
"I should have been the one to pay but she actually bought me many things to teach me. If I never met her, I would never have opened my eyes to art and I would never have gained confidence in myself to try many different things. She gave me as a present a book called, 'To Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci' which helped me to become more observant about everything and helped me to develop and implement ideas. I studied the book very carefully, even underlining certain parts. My art teacher and the book still influence me greatly to this day."

구 혜선 앞에 놓인 새로운 도전은 음악을 소재로 한 장편영화 ‘요술’의 연출이다. 단편 ‘행복한 도우미’작업을 함께 했던 스태프들을 다시 불러모았고 시나리오와 촬영준비도 끝난 상태다. 11, 12월 두 달간 촬영한 후 빠르면 내년 상반기에 공개가 가능할 것으로 구혜선은 예상했다.
GHS's next challenge right in front of her is the production of the musically based full-length movie, MAGIC. She has gathered everybody who have already worked with her on the short film, Cheerful Caretaker. Her script is complete and all the preparation work to start filming is also complete. She plans to complete filming the movie during the months of November and December of this year. If everything is finalized, she may be able to open her movie as soon as the first part of next year.

“항상 캐스팅 당하다가 배우를 캐스팅하는 입장이 되고 보니 만만치않네요. 그렇지 않아도 남들에게 부탁하고 도움을 많이 받아왔는데, 이제부터 더 많이 해야 될 것 같습니다. 그런데 그 모든 과정이 너무 재미있어요.”
"As an actress, I never knew how hard and difficult to be in the position to cast for actors. I have already asked for so much help and guidance. However, I have to do even more full force from now on. But, I find all this process and circumstance so very interesting."
